Travertine is a good all round stone for genral use and is often used in wet areas as it doesn't get slippery when wet. It is naturally full of holes, but you generally pay more for better quality stone with fewer and/or smaller holes.
For interior use though, travertine is usually filled. It can be bought ready filled and honed flat or can be filled with grout as it is installed.
